Abstract
Since the commencement of the Community Health Survey (CHS) in 2008 in Korea, considerable attention has been paid to understanding the effect of community characteristics on health outcomes and disparities. Community health profiles
clarify the contextual characteristics that could affect patterns of community health.
This study aimed to construct community health profiles based on secondary sources of data comprising comprehensive
area-based indicators, to inform policy makers and public health experts working at local public health centers regarding the level of community health.
The area-based (Si-Gun-Gu) data indicators included several dimensions of the social economic status, social network,
health behavior, healthcare resource and utilization, and physical environment of each community. We selected core
indicators in each set of dimensions and components, and attempted to link CHS data with these indicators. In total, 1,995
community health status indicators were identified, including health outcomes (1,007) and health determinants such as
demographic and socio-economic factors (157), physical environment factors (149), health behaviors (226), healthcare
resources (153), and healthcare utilizations factors (303).
These databases reveal the need for developing a user-friendly web interface for better communication among public health practitioners and community health workers, and for improving the understanding of community health among local
residents. More research is needed to develop a conceptual framework on community health considering diverse sociocultural contexts.
